Oral and Dental Health in Diabetes Patients

Although it is common in daily life, one of the wrong information is that implant treatment cannot be applied to diabetes patients. This misconception increases the speed of tooth loss and bone destruction in people with diabetes. Diabetes patients can maintain their teeth for many years if they control sugar levels and undergo regular dentist control.

What are the symptoms of diabetes and diabetes in oral and dental health?

What are the problems that occur in the mouth of patients with diabetes?

The following oral complications may develop in diabetes as a result of susceptibility to infection, nerve damage, vascular, and lack of immunity:

  • Increased Ca2 + and glucose-induced plaque accumulation in saliva
  • Ulcers
  • Pulpitis
  • Inflammation of tooth extraction cavity
  • Dry mouth

Bad breath and wounds can be a precursor of diabetes.

Diabetes patients have a unique bad breath. And understanding this through the patient’s breath depends on the dentist, the experience of the dentist. Intra-oral wounds can occur for many reasons. Diabetes patients who are not under control of diabetes mellitus in the mouth, but the wounds are not observed for a long time or hard to pass. The dentist should refer the patient to these complaints.

Bone loss causes tooth loss

Most of the patients with uncontrolled sugar discomfort and gum support are lost in the gums. When tooth loss due to early diabetes and shaking occurs, it is preferable to wear a diaper just because of diabetes. Can tooth extraction be done with diabetes? Can implant treatment be applied to diabetics?

There is a perception that diabetic patients cannot undergo tooth extraction or implant treatment. However, every patient can be treated with or without diabetes. The first priority of diabetes patients is to control the sugar level. All treatment modalities for oral and dental health may be applied in diabetes patients with diabetes control. The points to be considered here are; to consider that patients with diabetes are special patients, that a special treatment method should be applied and the level of recovery will be different from other patients.

Dental problems can be seen in patients with diabetes, but it is important to check the oral and dental health at regular intervals and to prevent the problems that may occur with the necessary measures in advance. Encouraging the patient to pay attention to oral hygiene will prevent many problems.

Especially in patients with diabetes, bone loss causes very large damage to the teeth. Diabetes patients should first pay attention to sugar levels and then apply daily cleansing by giving importance to oral and dental health and must have routine controls every 6 months.
