What is dental calculus or tartar?

Dental calculus is an accumulation of some foods and saliva around the teeth, so this accumulation of these materials causes various gum diseases, at the end it forms what is called tartar which is very solid layer like pebbles, so many people may not be able to remove and clean  it at home and maybe that need an  intervention of a dentist and a presence of some special tools, tartar accumulation usually starts from the bottom of the teeth, then gradually begins to climb up. The tartar carries some bacteria that may destroy the teeth and cause cavities.

What are the symptoms of dental calculus?

There are several reasons that show you have tartars such as gingiva bleeding  if your gums are bleeding, you should consult your dentist even if you didn’t feel  by any pain.

Is tartar or calculus on the teeth  harmful or not ?

A lot of people don’t feel by any pain because it gradually accumulates on the gums and between the teeth as the infection begins to develop in your gingiva, the destruction of the bone in the lower parts of the teeth starts and can lead to teeth loss, so early detection and early treatment can help a lot to avoid losing your teeth. It is highly recommended to visit your dentist regularly every six months.

How many times you should clean your teeth at the dentist if there is calculus ?

There is nothing specific about this  matter, it depends on the situation of the patients, but any way it can be cleaned regularly every six months

Does the dental calculus cause a bad smell ?

The calculus itself can’t make any bad smell or bad breath. Poor oral hygiene, gum diseases, cavities, tooth decay or mouth infections can also be causes of halitosis. Infections in the lungs , sinuses or airways and stomach diseases can also be a main reason of bad breath.

 What are the causes of of dental calculus?

Tartar starts to occur when you see how much plaque is formed, which consists of bacteria and leftover food accumulated on the gum line, then hardens and turns into lime, and plaque arises when you eat, where the bacteria in the mouth analyze the carbohydrates in the mouth into acids, and these acids mix with food and saliva residues to form plaque.

When it is neglected or being uncleaned  on a daily basis that make it stick to the teeth more and more, then it will be very difficult to remove it with brush and floss, but it must be dealt with by a specialized dentist. These bacteria can also cause many other infections such as pneumonia, regular cleaning of the teeth works to prevent plaque build-up, as its accumulation may weaken the enamel layer, and the root of the teeth may also weaken, to remove the tartar, you should seek help from a dentist, who has the proper tools to get rid of tartar without damaging the teeth, and dental care must be taken regularly.

Ways of preserving the teeth clean and without any tartars…

Brushing the teeth regularly twice a day,  be careful not to harm your gums while you are brushing, as recommended to use the electronic brush, since it contributes to reduce  the plaque more than the normal brush. Choose a suitable toothpaste that contains fluoride, as fluoride helps to repair the damaged enamel layer. Use of dental floss, as dental floss is more important than brush in removing plaque. Rinsing mouthwashes with antiseptic mouthwash on a daily basis, to get rid of accumulated bacteria. Reducing of consuming sugar,  because sugar  can increase bacteria in the mouth. Drink water after meals to reduce the presence of sugar in the mouth. Stay away from smoking .

There are recent studies have shown that smokers are more likely to accumulate lime than others.
