Hi, how can we help?

ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY

Orthognathic surgery is the treatment method carried out by orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery, which are among the dentistry branches, to improve both functionality (chewing, speaking) and aesthetic appearance in patients with advanced jaw skeletal structure.

It is a surgical procedure that allows improvements on the jaw skeleton structure in cases where the jaw closures are incompatible with each other and the lower jaw is advanced, posterior or asymmetrical compared to the upper jaw.

How is orthognathic surgery applied?

In Dentakademi Oral and Dental Healthcare Center, before orthognathic surgery, cefolometric, panoramic and 3D imaging in our computer-aided tomography unit in our imaging center, and after consultation with oral diagnosis, orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery departments, appropriate treatment planning is prepared for the patient. The treatment planning made is explained to our patient in detail and all questions of our patient are answered. After our patient accepts the treatment plan we have suggested, his appointments are organized and the treatment process is started.

The first step of the treatment is the orthodontic treatment process that will last 1-2 years on average. Before proceeding to the surgical step, the bite of the teeth on the jaws should be corrected. With the applied wire treatment, the teeth are brought to their intended positions and the correct jaw closures are ensured.

After the orthodontic treatment process is completed and the teeth on the jaw are in the correct positions, the patient is directed to the jaw surgery department of our hospital to plan the surgical process. Our maxillofacial surgeon performs the examination of our patient with 3D imaging and informs our patient about the procedure to be performed. After the surgical planning, the surgical phase is started with the approval of our patient.

Our patient, who has a 1-month recovery period after the surgical procedure, will have an orthodontic treatment process that will last for 6-12 months as the final stage. This treatment is the finishing treatment that ensures permanent positions of the teeth after the first orthodontic and corrective surgical procedure.

Does the patient feel pain during it?

Orthognathic surgery is a detailed surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia, unlike implant surgery. Therefore, our patients will not feel any pain and surgical procedure as they will be under general anesthesia during the procedure.

Complications such as pain, swelling of the face, bruising, and numbness in the procedure area can be seen in all surgical procedures after the surgical procedure. Compliance with our physician’s recommendations and correct use of medications will help to minimize the complications that may occur and to eliminate them in a short time.

Orthognathic surgery is applied to whom?

Orthognathic surgery is a corrective treatment method applied to adult patients who have completed bone development. If deemed necessary, with this procedure applied in both jaws:

1- Problems in respiratory functions due to excessive chewing, closing and speaking in the face area and improper jaw positions,

2-It is applied to patients who have aesthetic anxiety in the face area because the chin positions are too far ahead or too far behind each other.

Advantages of orthognathic surgery

The patient’s own wishes are also taken into consideration while making the treatment plan required by the patient during the first examination, namely oral diagnosis. Basically, although physical problems are at the forefront, they are expressed in aesthetic concerns. The treatment performed is a treatment that improves the patient psychology in terms of both being a corrective procedure on the jaw skeleton structure and providing aesthetic improvement by bringing the teeth to their own positions.

After the procedure, the correction of the jaw closures and the idealization of the tooth rows create positive results in the patient’s appearance. Improves quality of life as a result of improvements in speech, chewing and respiratory functions
